They just celebrated on June 21, 2009 55th years of service. Our classmate Carl (married to Linda McCarter)runs the family business. The best ice cream - food in town. My parents lived in Coral Hills and were building their dream home in Friendly. When we went to work on the house on weekends the treat was to stop at Hovermale's on the way home. Us kids always looked forward to that stop. Finally we moved to Oxon Hill and got that treat alot more often!! Do you have any memories of Hovermale's???? Also FYI - Hovermale's Taste Best has a page on Facebook. Speaking of Coral Hills - anyone ever eat at the Dixie Pig? Makes my mouth water just to think about those BBQ sandwiches. Sure wish they were still around. Gosh - I must be hungry - Jiffy's sandwiches also comes to mind. Then there was Pizzanos (sp) pizza. Be back - headed to the kitchen.

We left the Coral Hills area for Oxon Hill when I was going into 2nd grade. I know when Jack and I married we would go back there often for BBQ. Do you know when they closed - did they move? Sure wish I had the recipe for the BBQ and that cole slaw and those soft, fresh buns. It's a small world - so your Aunt's were the cooks. that is neat. Thanks for sharing.

We were like alot of people. Any excuse to go to Hovermale's and get ice cream at least once a week. You would crave that ice cream. About the Dixie Pig, until I was 10, I lived near Cedar Hill Cemetery, so the Dixie Pig in Coral Hills was the place to go. When it moved to Alexandria, I would take my mom there often, but I agree with Frank, it wasn't as good as when it was in Coral Hills. Pizzano's pizza was dinner for my family every Friday night. What wonderful memories and my mouth is waterming right now.

Yes, Don - Bradbury Htgs is where I attended first grade. I don't have a class picture or remember the teacher or much else about it. The one memory I have of that school is the inside play area. The tall bldg (probably was only 2 stories lol) all around as we played. My gosh, maybe we were in the same class. what do you remember from those days? This is cool. I did look it up on classmates.com and there was one person who did post a picture from that time frame. We lived in apts just down the hill from the Dixie Pig - Antoinette Garden apts --also Don Gardner, one of our classmates lived there too. Our families lived in the same courtyard of apts - I was 2 when we met. Loved his parents -just the nicest people.

Donna I don't remember the teacher or anything but I do know both my parents went to that school. The principal that was there when we went was a first grade teacher when my dad and mom went. She also taught a lot of my mother and fathers' family. She later joined the church we went to Broadway Baptist. When my mom died, she was at the funeral home and talked to many people. She would ask them their name and say I taught you right and they would say yes. She walked up to my grandfather and said what is your name he told her Roy Haller and she said did I teach you elementary school and my granddad said not unless you’re a hell or a lot older that you look. She had taught Roy Jr. my uncle. We lived in Boulevard htgs. I just remember walking to school. And to the movie theater in Coral Hills.

Don, I remember the theater. My mom and I would walk to it and see the Disney movies or the Elvis ones. I have wonderful memories of that theater. I think it was a Giant and a Peoples Drug Store there too. Do you remember the frozen custard place on Southern Avenue, close to where you came into Coral Hills?

OMG. So many memories! My mom was a substitute teacher at Bradbury Hgts. and Sandy Mount until she started to teach 4th grade full-time at Flintstone, in Forest Hgts. Does anyone remember Fairfax Village and Naylor Gardens, in SE? Stanton Elementary and Kramer Jr. High? So long ago . . . .

Bonnie I sure do remember the frozen custard place and I remember safeway as you came into Coral hills. Jennifer I remember Fairfax Village and Naylor Gardens I think I had an uncle who lived in Naylor Gardens. Also remember that WPGC started over the bus garage in Coral hills. I also remember the Senate inn with Jimmy Dean and the Texas Wildcats sign on the front. My Family lived in Hillside. My Grandfather started the Hillside fire company.

Jennifer and Don, did either of you ever have an ice cream soda at Fairfax Village Drug Store. It was yummy. That was my treat for after report cards came out as long as I got good grades. I knew a radio starion was above the bus station. That shopping center had the two story area on one side and covered parking in the back. I think that is right. My mom and dad use to go to the Senate Inn regularly to see Jimmy Dean and Roy Clark. My grandma lived with us, so whenever they were there and for some reason I think that they were at the Dixie Pig some nights too, I would be home with my Grandma and they would be out at the Senate Inn or the Dixie Pig listening to music. I don't remember the Texas Wildcats though.

interesting reads on others memories of the DC area http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Flats/4759/memories.html I had to go find a map and look at the area it has been so long - we left MD in 1971 so I had forgotten some of the roads. The apts were on Benning Rd.

Me too, Don. I have many memories of the bus stop in Fairfax Village at the top of the hill to catch the street car to go downtown to Hecht's or Woodies. My mouth is watering remembering the ice cream sodas at the drug store. I think Jimmy Dean was the local favorites in our mom and dad's generation. I know they use to play his music at home all of the time.

Dusty, Fairfax Village is a shopping center just across Southern Ave. on the DC, Maryland line. Nothing like the area around George Mason University in Fairfax VA. Fairfax Village is more like South Central Los Angles.

I'm like you Dusty, we lived up in Glassmanor and never had Hovermale's until one of our reunions went there, I enjoyed what I had that night, but we used to go to a shop that I think was near the Congress movie Theater. I have no idea of the street name any more.

Hi Guys - sorry I dropped out for a week there - been working steadily on our Clipper contact info to get it ready to be mailed back to the committee. Did some searching - after you all mentioned some of the other items the old brain did start kicking in memories. On looking for info on the apts where we lived I found the following. Antoinette Garden apts are now known as Highland Ridge in Capital Hgts Md. Comments posted by people who lived or live there. Yikes - not a good place to be now. Its Not what it seems From: Hellwhole300 Date posted: 10/15/2008 Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2008 I moved here back in 2003. Me,My husband and my son. We look around before moving in for about a week or so just to get a feel of the area. Wow it seems to be great. Honey, now its like a damn death hole. You have people using drugs inside the hallways of the building and in the basement and other places not to mention. You can't go outside without being afraid of getting shot and the parking is hella crazy. And they keep going up on the rent and the teneants don't see any improvement whatsoever. Not to metion they can't even keep the doors fix, but they are always blaming the tenants for everything. Hello maybe if you all tried another lock system things would change. And oh they just sent out a list to the whole community with everybody that was getting evicted on it. That was put in everybodys door to see whom was getting evicted. Damn how could you do that to people. And again they want to go up on the rent what the hell is really going on over there in 1211. If you don't have to move here DON'T. Looks can be deceiving. One thing I like about theis damn place is the Maintanece workers they help you out to the best of there ability and will come whenever you call. Good Job Maintanece Nice Apartment Bad Area From: -Anonymous- Date posted: 7/11/2007 Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2007 The apartment itself is roomy but outside the doors is something else. Teens shooting guns in the courtyard and parking area behind the buildings. Teens using drugs and shooting dice in front of my building until the wee hours. The contractors that the rental office hire are the worst. The price is affordable and in three years I have only seen two roaches. The big bug problem is centipedes. I lived there once! From: -Anonymous- Date posted: 6/2/2006 Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2004 When I first moved in it was ok, but the outside area meaning the parking lots--start filling up with the neighborhood boys and that made me uncomfortable being as though I am a single parent of a young child! I did not want to let him see a negative image for young black males. As far as the apartment goes--it was nice and very affordable. The kitchen was kinda out dated but they did relay my tub for me and painted. The parking was not all that great becuase it was limited. And my car was broken into twice. In that area it does not matter what kind of car you have. If you did not have any kind of alarm or bar on your steering wheel it was stolen or broken into. I moved shortly after. You would think that they would not be so bold being as though the parking was in the front of the apartment building.

My old neighborhood is not the greatest anymore either. Since it is so close to National Harbor, you would think it would be better than it looks. The only place we could walk to was Fort Foote Market and it wasn't much there.

As many of you know, I worked those streets from 1970 to 2002. Its changed so much that members of our class that have been away for a while, wouldn't recognize it anymore. The Prince George's County we knew in 1965 is long gone, I have many memories of that place, some good and many not so good. I suppose it's best to remember the good ones.

It is best to remember the good ones. WE really lived in a great place at the time to grow up. It was convenient to alot of things, safe and so many wonderful people grew up there with us. It almost makes me cry each time I think about how crime-ridden the area has become.

So many memories . . . I remember 3rd grade at Stanton Elementary School and watching Sears being built! (I heard Sears was torn down a few years ago). And, movies at the Naylor Theatre (All the Disney movies & later, Jail House Rock w/Elvis!). I am surprised at how many of us experienced our early years in that area. Mike Greene, David Kipple? Maybe we went to nursery school together! :)

I remember Sears being built. Remember the guy in that house that wouldn't sell - so they built the store and parking lot around him. And at the Nalyor you had to park in the back and walk through an ally to get to the front.

I snagged those photos from other sites - one was the Clipper Port on My Family started by Mike Eckert class of 64. Unfortunately we lost Mike a few summers ago and Maggie Novonty (66) took over the site. I don't remember Bob's Custard but this was posted on Mike's site. Also I need to ask Don Grimley about Bradbury Hts- did it look like that picture? The only pictures in my mind of that school was of the play yard. And this may be all wrong. The play yard was inside had 4 walls surrounding it. Seemed that it was 2 stories around us. Those red bricks and the windows covered with black wire. Seemed we had to take a couple of steps down into it. I have looked for pictures but can't find any. Frank - guess that The Chair does hold special memories. I've got some more will post in a couple of days. Ok another question - did the Dixie Pig have like a pipe organ in it?
