I read in the paper this morning that on this date in 1776, the British captured Fort Washington. I never knew this before, even though my family went down there almost annually when I was growing up. Did you know this or am I the only one that never knew?

Our family would hold a reunion at Ft. Washington every year. I thought the British only captured the Fort after they burned DC during the War of 1812.

you were right. The Fort Washington that fell on this date in 1776 was located in New York! When I googled it, I learned the true storyl Next time I won't assume anything!!!

I was in that war. The cheating ass British parked all their boats in Piscataway bay and walked up to the fort and walked right in by land. That sissy moot at the front door wasn't going to stop them. Besides it never had any water in it.
Then I was born again in 1947 and.................

Finally found a picture of that "sissy moat" at Fort Washington-

Finally got the pictures loaded - look to section titled Fort Washington Pictures.

Boy, do those pictures bring back memories. The ones covered with grass were the ones we played in the most.

Great pictures. The one you remembered most was also the one I remembered. I never knew there was a lighthouse down there. We learn something new everyday. Thanks again for all you do.

Talk about flashbacks!! It seems the Park Service has fixed it up since we were kids.Great memories abound from that area and our era.

I was so surprised to see those pictures. The ones covered with grass I remembered the most, however that #7 picture - I remember playing on that fort also. There was a Navy picnic and us kids wanted to go on an adventure. I was one of the youngest (still lived in Coral Hills so I had to be 6ish. There were older kids, my cousin Ed Bellaifore was one of them. Looking back he had to be all of 8 or 9. The parents said we could go to the one fort that could be seen from the picnic area and my father told me not to go anywhere else but to stay with the group. We got to that fort played and then the older kids saw another fort and started towards that one. I remember being torn remembering my father's words. Stay at that fort by myself or go with the group to the next fort. I couldn't see my way back to where the parents were so I went with the group. We eventually made our way to that #7 fort- eventually you could see a line of cars coming. Yep the Parents. I got the beating of my life that day, I also was the only one that got spanked.

That moat one also brings back a memory. Mom had taken us girls out there for the day. We drove across the moat and parked inside the fort. You could still drive over at that time. She locked her keys in the car. After trying to figure out what to do, besides calling Dad, the Park Ranger came over and said he had the same kind of car and maybe, just maybe his key would work. And it DID! Yah, we didn't have to call Dad or tell him. Mom breathed a sigh of relief.
I got these pictures off the NPS.org site for Fort Washington - a great write up on everything there. http://www.nps.gov/fowa/index.htm
